这阵子因为电脑中毒的关系,加上赶着收拾家里,很少上网 blog,不过自言自语的老毛病还是在的,随时随地总有新旧不一的杂念头冒出泡来,特别是读了篇什么文章、又看了部什么片子之后。台湾地震之后,电讯断了好几天,少了和娘煲电话粥的机会,幸亏还有我的面首至尊,不厌其烦地听我絮絮叨叨 (至于是否有热诚与兴趣了解呢,那是另一回事 )。

基本上,我们不订报,也很少看电视新闻,因为做了这两件事的后果,通常都很令人沮丧  比较固定买的是星期二的The Straits Times,因为有副刊 Digital Times,跟熊猫的专业有关;本胖胖猫是个小气鬼,花了八毛钱,就得捞回本,所以除了财经和广告不看,其他统统兮哩呼噜囫囵吞下肚,尽管沮丧,总还有个好处 — 练习英文。

说起本地报纸,还真是只有 The Straits Times 和联合早报是值得一看的,其他什么华文晚报、NewPaper,都是八卦而已,很没水准。那天在麦当劳吃薯条,我忍不住哈哈大笑起来,对面桌的男士正拿着一份 NewPaper 看得津津有味,头条是 “男子全裸在停车场屋顶冲凉”。我说你们新加坡人很有意思啊,治安太好了是怎么着,这种也可以当成报纸的头条 (这种时刻,我就会忘记 — 可能是选择性的失忆  — 自己也是新加坡人了 ~)。熊猫回头瞄了瞄,也忍不住笑出来。新加坡啊,新加坡!有意思得紧呐 ~

停笔一阵子,文思真是乱得可以。Anyway,圣诞节前两天,我们买了报纸,想说看看或许电视上有什么精彩长片,结果并没有,但是那天的专题报道 “World with no PEACE? World with no JOY?” 十分叩人心弦,我当下决定要贴上来和大家分享。严格说起来,是老生常谈,但人类是那么健忘的动物 (有意?无意?只有天晓得!),有机会就要多提醒自己。我们中国人说,修身齐家治国平天下,无论这世界再怎么令人失望,还是要从我们本身做起,个人的力量或许很微薄,但是众志成城,这个世界的明天就会多一分美好。这是为什么我不爱读那些尖酸刻薄、或是愤世嫉俗的文章,你当然有抱怨的自由,但是你又为这个世界做了什么努力?

当时,电脑还未康复,所以我一直在构思文章的标题,怎样比较能确切反映我所要表达的内容。熄灯之后,过了好一会儿,我轻声问熊猫,你觉得 "Numbers to Ponder" 如何?熊猫一头雾水,我赶快大略解释给他听;听了后,他问为什么不用 statistics?我说因为感觉 statistics 这个词太科学了,有点冷冰冰的,而这些都是有血有肉的事实。。。那么 “Make A Life” 呢?我最喜欢的话之一,就是 Winston Churchill 说的:We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. 熊猫说可是也许会有人想成 “make a baby” 的意思呢?我说那也可以说得通啊,a baby is the miracle of life 嘛,我希望大家都能对生命抱着热情,懂得感恩呢。不然 “Heal The World” 呢?。。。

现在中文回来了,既然我还是没有特别的灵感 (我的英文标题都是确实反映当下的灵感),就不必再伤脑筋了。我的新年没有新希望,总是不变的 — 世界大同。 看看那些骇人的数字,让我们都学着更惜福吧!

* STRIFE:3.6 million  — The number of people killed in war since 1990 (自 1990 年以来,丧生于战争的人数)
